Julie 3: Sculpting Dragons with Dr Julie Anne Denton
Large off-mandrel sculpture in borosilicate glass
5x 1.5 hour weekly ONLINE sessions
Fee includes: 5x1.5 hr sessions + 4x15min private consultations + access to the learning group*
We are very pleased to welcome the return of the very engaging Dr Julie Anne Denton to our line-up of international artists, this time with a little twist, as Julie will be teaching you in the comfort of your own studios via Zoom!
In this 5-part course you will learn to make a large off-mandrel dragon sculpture in many stages to skyrocket your sculptural learning curve. The dragon will be made in components in coloured borosilicate with the use of powders and contemporised filigrana techniques to create depth and reality as opposed to a cartoon-like flat representation. Dragon wings are made by pulling points and encasing the tubing, blowing the tubing and finally cutting and shaping the wings. The body will encompass claws, dragon tendrils, scales and eyes amongst other things. You will also create your own dragon eye murrini in borosilicate glass.
Techniques include
The use of tubing, pulling points, colour application, heat/glass control, glass rules, the family of annealing flames from cold to hot and vice versa, how to combat cracking, how to fix glass and structural engineering – how to make glass bomb proof for the post and transportation.
Sessions will run for approx 1.5 hours from 1am every Thursday morning between 6 August and 3 September via Zoom. As well as these 5 small group sessions, you will also be eligible for 4x 15-minute one-on-one consultations with Julie to troubleshoot aspects of the techniques you might be struggling with.
Skill Level
Own torch/access to flameworking studio essential. Prior experience in flameworking or beadmaking is useful. Even better if you have completed a Julie 1 or Julie 2 course.
*The learning group includes access to live video tutorials, visual PDFs of the steps and photos of the finished steps, plus the opportunity to join an exclusive class FaceBook group.
