A good insulator for annealing flame-worked glass or for making your own moulds
Vermiculite can be used to make durable slumping moulds (with no undercuts), when mixed with Fondue Cement (product 957.971).
Vermiculite can also be used in beadmaking, due to its excellent insulating properties. Beads can be removed from the flame and inserted into a pan of warm vermiculite (once glass is no longer glowing hot). This enables the beads to cool down gently and reduces the risk of cracking. Once cooled, beads can then be removed from the mandrel and annealed in batches in a kiln.
